In recent weeks, a growing number of foreign
residents have been asking Taiwan What’s up?
questions about working in Taiwan. Here are
a few answers from the National Immigration
Agency (NIA).
If it is only for a short-term or parttime
job, do I have to apply for a work
permit?
Yes, even for a short-term job paid by the hour,
you must apply for a work permit in order to
comply with existing regulations.
If an employer already applied for my
work permit, can I also work for a
second employer?
No, you can only work for the company which
hired you — within the employment period stipulated
in your contract, unless another employer
also applied for a second work permit.
What would happen if I worked
without applying for a work permit?
You could be fined between NT$30,000 and
NT$150,000 under Article 43 of the Employment
Service Act. You could also be deported
for violation of the Immigration Act.
Can the fine for violating work regulations
be waved because I didn’t know
about the regulations included in the
Employment Service Act?
The penalty will not be waved, even if the person
contends that he or she didn’t know about the regulations
included in the Employment Service Act. ■
