Legal experience transforms

Robin Winkler
knows Taiwan
inside out
Asking Robin Winkler, director of Wild
at Heart Legal Defense Association
Taiwan and founder of Winkler
Partners, to reach past the landmarks of
his life and remember his childhood aspirations
will yield the response: “That is a
good question ... such a simple question;
why can’t I answer it simply?”
With an upbringing in Wisconsin and
Colorado in what he described as a “progressive”
household, Winkler had been
plagued with a sense of guilt he was
unable to pinpoint, knowing in his heart
that he was more privileged than others.
The reason for his loss of words
may be that for over a decade, the outspoken
Green Party co-convener who
famously gave up his U.S. citizenship for
a Taiwanese one is finally doing what he
believes is right — throwing his time into
Wild at Heart, promoting environmental
issues, fighting against the government's
“reallocation of resources,” and censuring
big corporations who also happen to be
the biggest polluters.
Winkler calls this his “transformation,”
a process that occurred in 2001, when
he left the now defunct law firm Qi Lin
International after practicing commercial
law in Taiwan since the 1980s. It all boiled
down to the importance of “knowing how
much is enough,” as a message society
as a whole must heed, especially when
resources are being used up faster than
the speed at which they could be regenerated.
Political action, Winkler maintains, is
still the best way to shed light on social,
economic and environmental issues. ■
